Nutrition and diabetes


When it comes to nutrition and diabetes, it's all about finding what works for you. Nutrition is a powerful tool for managing diabetes or prediabetes, but there's no one diet that's a "one size fits all." 

If eating right for your diabetes is new to you, follow these tips to help you get started on your journey.

-Include lots of non-starchy vegetables and lean proteins 

-Minimize added sugars and refined grains, choose whole grains

-The amount of carbohydrates at meals will differ for everyone, but remember, your body needs carbohydrates to keep its blood sugar up and avoid hypoglycemia so be sure to include some at all meals and snacks

-By swapping out saturated fats (ex. butter and beef) with unsaturated fats (ex. olive oil, fish) you can help lower your risk of developing kidney disease and cardiovascular disease.

-Incorporate exercise into your lifestyle to help aide in weight loss - weight loss has been shown to help lower blood sugars and reduce A1c.
